Three Pedestrians Including 6-Year-Old Struck In 24 Hours In Paramus, PD Expands Safety Efforts

In the past 24 hours alone, three separate incidents involving pedestrians have been reported, Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti said Saturday, Nov. 16.

The first occurred on Friday, Nov. 15, at 3:46 p.m., when a 6-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle on Ridgewood Avenue near The Cupola, the chief said. The child reportedly ran into the road and sustained a bump on the head. His father declined emergency transport and took him to the hospital himself, according to authorities.

Later that day, at 5:35 p.m., a young girl was hit while crossing Spring Valley Road near Eastbrook School, according to Guidetti. Police said the pedestrian had activated the crossing control device and was struck while in the crosswalk. She was alert but injured, complaining of possible leg and hip pain. EMS transported her to a nearby hospital. Detective Sgt. Jack Cacamis is leading the investigation.

The third incident occurred on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1:17 p.m., in the parking lot of Bergen Town Center near Whole Foods. A 71-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and complained of minor leg pain but declined hospital transport, police said.

Safety Tips Issued by Paramus Police:

As the holiday season approaches and traffic increases, Guidetti has urged drivers and pedestrians to take precautions:

• Avoid Distractions: Drivers and pedestrians should stay focused and avoid using phones or wearing headphones while crossing streets.
• Be Alert in Parking Lots: Slow down, watch for pedestrians, and use caution when reversing.
• Follow Traffic Laws: Drivers must yield at crosswalks and obey speed limits. Pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crosswalks and avoid running into traffic.
• Be Patient and Courteous: Anticipate heavy traffic and allow extra travel time.

“These incidents underscore the importance of vigilance on our roads,” Guidetti said. “By working together, we can make Paramus safer for everyone.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incidents as part of their expanded Traffic Safety Unit efforts. Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and prioritize safety.
